Featured Artist: Angela Davis

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure to chat with Angela Davis, an independent R&B musician from Detroit, Michigan. Hi Angela! Can you share with us some of your earliest memories of music? Some of my earliest music memories are listening in awe of my uncle Calvin playing and singing when he came to visit the family during the holidays. I was around 3 years old and after seeing and hearing him, I knew I wanted to sing too. I also remember singing songs by some of my favorite R&B artists (Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills) over and over again in my room. I was determined to become a good singer I joined Glee club in 5th grade (despite being terribly shy). Best decision I could've made because it helped me break out of my shell. We noticed that you have Nordic roots. How does this influence your music? I started to compose music when I was a child and lived in Finland. I sat at the piano and piano pieces just came to me. My piano teacher recorded them and appreciated them. I remember that my grandmother often asked me to play them all. My mother was also very supportive. My father had also an important impact. For him it was not enough that I could play without anyone teaching me how to do it. He said that I must take piano lessons.
