Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure to chat with Angela Davis, an independent R&B musician from Detroit, Michigan.

Hi Angela! Can you share with us some of your earliest memories of music?

Some of my earliest music memories are listening in awe of my uncle Calvin playing and singing when he came to visit the family during the holidays. I was around 3 years old and after seeing and hearing him, I knew I wanted to sing too.

I also remember singing songs by some of my favorite R&B artists (Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills) over and over again in my room. I was determined to become a good singer 🙂

I joined Glee club in 5th grade (despite being terribly shy). Best decision I could've made because it helped me break out of my shell.

What is it like being a musician in Detroit?

Detroit is an amazing city full of some of the most talented vocalists and musicians in the world! I love the music community and culture. Over the years I have made many connections and friendships. The Music Hall Jazz Cafe, Aretha Franklin Amphitheater, and Baker's Keyboard Lounge are some of my favorite hometown venues to perform. Baker's is such a gem in our city because it holds so much history and is the oldest jazz club in the world.

How has the Covid pandemic affected you?

The pandemic has affected me personally (losing many friends in the music community), and business wise because most of the weddings and private parties I perform in were either cancelled or postponed. I have also ironically been affected in a positive way because the pandemic forced me to create new income streams via virtual vocal lessons, and virtual mini concerts.

What inspires you on a day-to-day basis?

What inspires me is learning everyday. I always want to evolve and become better than I was yesterday. I always look at what my favorite artists and even (indie artist friends) are doing as inspiration to push myself to strive higher and try new things. My personal and life experiences are usually what I write about in my music.

If you can only recommend one song to a new listener from your catalogue, which song would you choose and why?

I'd choose my song "Finishline (I Made it)" because I feel EVERYONE one can relate. We have all been through challenges but are still here to tell our story. (Especially with what is currently going on)

What can your listeners expect from you in the near future?

I am working on a live studio recording session/ video (think MTV Unplugged with a twist) to be recorded and filmed next month (November 2020) and released by the end of the year. I want to create amazing content that will capture new fans all over the world. I am also working on new music that I hope to release by the first quarter of 2021 🙂

Hey Camille! Can you tell us where you’re from? I’m from Athens, Ga (not Greece 😂 ) everyone always thinks that if I don’t say Georgia. My mom is Cuban & my dad is Arabic & Finnish! ☺ ️ The Cuban side has definitely influenced my music & with that has given me more confidence about my culture because as a kid, I was really timid and insecure about that because of the area I was going to school in at the time. I’ve embraced it now & one of my songs “No Soy Menos” is about embracing whoever you are, especially being a woman. I’m actually not fluent in Spanish so I had to learn some more Spanish for some of it, which was hard but fun! I might have some Arabic sounding surprises in some of my new stuff 😉 Who are your biggest influences from the music industry?  Demi Lovato’s empowering & sassy lyrics in a lot of her music has really helped influence a lot of my writing. I’ve always looked up to Joan Jett & her music and she’s a total badass, but ...

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure of doing a virtual interview with pop rock singer-songwriter Maini Sorri !                                                         Photos by Johan Zetterlund Hi Maini! We noticed that you have Nordic roots. How does this influence your music? I started to compose music when I was a child and lived in Finland. I sat at the piano and piano pieces just came to me. My piano teacher recorded them and appreciated them. I remember that my grandmother often asked me to play them all. My mother was also very supportive. My father had also an important impact. For him it was not enough that I could play without anyone teaching me how to do it. He said that I must take piano lessons. I think it opened a door for me that lead to my Bachelor of Arts and to a...
