Featured Artist: MeMe Detroit

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure of chatting with MeMe Detroit, who is the vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist of outfit MeMe Detroit. MeMe Detroit is a grit rock and indie music project of the UK-based duo composed of MeMe (aka Maria Theresa Rodriguez) and Kallum McEwen.

First off, we would like to congratulate you for your latest single, Mean Rock N Roller! What inspired the song?

Thnx! Mean Rock N Roller came out as a tongue in cheek, bit of fun at first but then as the lyrics progressed, it became more of an anthem to stand up for what is true to yourself. I spent years listening and living my life by what others and society were telling me I.e “Being a musician is a hard career, all musicians are poor, You should have a safety net job and music should be just a hobby” etc. I always knew deep down that music and performing is way more than just a hobby, It’s a whole lifestyle and a fire deep within me. I always said that I’d never do anything that makes me unhappy as I’ll only ever get to be me, this person once so I’m damn well gonna make sure I live it doing what I love. I’m a mean Rock N Roller in a band lol and that’s who I’ll be. Mean Rock N Roller is an anthem to anyone who doubts their path in life due to societal pressures. You can be do or have anything you want in life so be your own Mean Rock N Roller.

The music video included video footage from friends and fans. Can you walk us through the process of making the video?

The video kind of unintentionally fell into place ha. I unfortunately got hit with Covid back in March which then developed into long haul Covid. Naturally there were a lot of lockdown restrictions in place anyway but it put me out of action for over 5 months (I’m still healing now 7 months on but sooo much better!) so we were wracking our brains (Kallum and I) to come up with a video concept for the new release that we could make whilst I was quarantined and out of action. During the times I was well enough, I started up a weekly livestream with our fans (MeMe Mondays). It’s been Amazing and allowed us to really connect with our fans on a personalised level and it’s become like a weekly meet up where all our fans have even become mates with each other, It's so ace! I was falling asleep one night, thinking about how ace the connection is then suddenly had a brainwave moment, “Why the hell don’t we celebrate that connection? Why don’t we all just make a vid together?”. The next day we put the call out in a post to our fans to get involved. The response was phenomenal! We sent them out specific allocated sections of the track and full filming instructions. The rest as they say is history! 🙂

For your new listeners who are only discovering your music now, which 3 songs from your catalogue would you recommend for them to listen to first?

I guess to get a real feel for where we are right now in our sound (Apart from Mean Rock N Roller of course!), I’d go with Soc Med Junkies, Can’t get you out of my mind and for something a little different in vibe How She Runs

What can we expect from MeMe Detroit in the near future?

We have another single due for release early next year, as soon as we are able to get into the studio again! We have a brand new monthly Podcast called The Redline Online, which I have no doubt will become more of a regular thing.

In the meantime we’re currently writing an album as well as booking a tour for the summer of 2021. We also have a huge secret project we’re working on but it’s one of those things, if I told you, I’d have to kill you or go to prison as we’ve all signed an NDA haha! It’s all really exciting though! In a weird way, I’m grateful of the spare time this year to reflect and get everything in place, ready for all we have coming.

Last but not the least, any message for the Female Indie Musicians community?

I want to say thank you to the Female Indie Musicians Community. It’s such an absolute pleasure to be a part of such an amazing network of so many talented but also uplifting and supportive women. You’re all awesome!

Hey Camille! Can you tell us where you’re from? I’m from Athens, Ga (not Greece 😂 ) everyone always thinks that if I don’t say Georgia. My mom is Cuban & my dad is Arabic & Finnish! ☺ ️ The Cuban side has definitely influenced my music & with that has given me more confidence about my culture because as a kid, I was really timid and insecure about that because of the area I was going to school in at the time. I’ve embraced it now & one of my songs “No Soy Menos” is about embracing whoever you are, especially being a woman. I’m actually not fluent in Spanish so I had to learn some more Spanish for some of it, which was hard but fun! I might have some Arabic sounding surprises in some of my new stuff 😉 Who are your biggest influences from the music industry?  Demi Lovato’s empowering & sassy lyrics in a lot of her music has really helped influence a lot of my writing. I’ve always looked up to Joan Jett & her music and she’s a total badass, but ...

Featured Artist: Angela Davis

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure to chat with Angela Davis, an independent R&B musician from Detroit, Michigan. Hi Angela! Can you share with us some of your earliest memories of music? Some of my earliest music memories are listening in awe of my uncle Calvin playing and singing when he came to visit the family during the holidays. I was around 3 years old and after seeing and hearing him, I knew I wanted to sing too. I also remember singing songs by some of my favorite R&B artists (Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills) over and over again in my room. I was determined to become a good singer I joined Glee club in 5th grade (despite being terribly shy). Best decision I could've made because it helped me break out of my shell. What is it like being a musician in Detroit? Detroit is an amazing city full of some of the most talented vocalists and musicians in the world! I love the music community and culture. Over the years I have made many conne...

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure of doing a virtual interview with pop rock singer-songwriter Maini Sorri !                                                         Photos by Johan Zetterlund Hi Maini! We noticed that you have Nordic roots. How does this influence your music? I started to compose music when I was a child and lived in Finland. I sat at the piano and piano pieces just came to me. My piano teacher recorded them and appreciated them. I remember that my grandmother often asked me to play them all. My mother was also very supportive. My father had also an important impact. For him it was not enough that I could play without anyone teaching me how to do it. He said that I must take piano lessons. I think it opened a door for me that lead to my Bachelor of Arts and to a...
