Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure of chatting with MeMe Detroit, who is the vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist of outfit MeMe Detroit. MeMe Detroit is a grit rock and indie music project of the UK-based duo composed of MeMe (aka Maria Theresa Rodriguez) and Kallum McEwen.  First off, we would like to congratulate you for your latest single, Mean Rock N Roller! What inspired the song?  Thnx! Mean Rock N Roller came out as a tongue in cheek, bit of fun at first but then as the lyrics progressed, it became more of an anthem to stand up for what is true to yourself. I spent years listening and living my life by what others and society were telling me I.e “Being a musician is a hard career, all musicians are poor, You should have a safety net job and music should be just a hobby” etc. I always knew deep down that music and performing is way more than just a hobby, It’s a whole lifestyle and a fire deep within me. Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure to chat with Angela Davis, an independent R&B musician from Detroit, Michigan. Hi Angela! Can you share with us some of your earliest memories of music? Some of my earliest music memories are listening in awe of my uncle Calvin playing and singing when he came to visit the family during the holidays. I was around 3 years old and after seeing and hearing him, I knew I wanted to sing too. I also remember singing songs by some of my favorite R&B artists (Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills) over and over again in my room. I was determined to become a good singer I joined Glee club in 5th grade (despite being terribly shy). Best decision I could've made because it helped me break out of my shell. We noticed that you have Nordic roots. How does this influence your music? I started to compose music when I was a child and lived in Finland. I sat at the piano and piano pieces just came to me. My piano teacher recorded them and appreciated them. I remember that my grandmother often asked me to play them all. My mother was also very supportive. My father had also an important impact.   Hey Camille! Can you tell us where you’re from? I’m from Athens, Ga (not Greece 😂 ) everyone always thinks that if I don’t say Georgia. My mom is Cuban & my dad is Arabic & Finnish! ☺ ️ The Cuban side has definitely influenced my music & with that has given me more confidence about my culture because as a kid, I was really timid and insecure about that because of the area I was going to school in at the time. I’ve embraced it now & one of my songs “No Soy Menos” is about embracing whoever you are, especially being a woman. I’m actually not fluent in Spanish so I had to learn some more Spanish for some of it, which was hard but fun! Hey Valerie! Can you tell us where you’re from?  I am originally from Southern California where I grew up in a little suburb town called Newbury Park. As of now, I have lived in Ogden, Utah the past almost 7 years. I am happily married with two sphynx kitties. Just surviving, thriving and being creative.  We noticed on Spotify that your earliest release was in 2011! How long have you been pursuing music and how has your music grown and transformed over the years?  I have been a musician and singer-songwriter since I was in grade school, but I have actively been pursuing music since I was in the Army in the early 2000s. When I was 4 or 5 years of age, I started writing stories with my drawings, but I could hear music in my mind all the time. I would tell my mom that I could hear orchestras in my head.
