Featured Artist: Helen O' Shea

It's been a while since a blog update and we're glad to have been able to do a virtual interview with the lovely Helen O'Shea!  We read from your Spotify bio that you had to travel a lot due to your career in medicine but went back to pursuing your love for music. Can you tell us more about that?  I started singing as a young child - first performing at a family wedding at the age of 13. Shortly after that I sang in a duo in high school and I was invited to join a local band at 18 but my dad said no and sent me off to medical school to get a "real job".  Then cut to many years later when my  father was tragically killed in a car crash, somewhere in the sea of grief, the dream to sing was rekindled. In 2011, I took to the stage in Montreal to sing an acapella version of "The Rose" at a fundraiser at my place of work, McGill University and the rest is history. On moving to Princeton that same year, the family decided that I would stay home for a while to h...

Featured Artist: Haley Tibbs

We had a chance to chat with Haley Tibbs, a singer-songwriter from Phoenix, AZ.  Hi Haley! You released your single, “Ego” a few months ago, what was your inspiration behind the song? This song is about the burdens of someone having a big ego. The song was inspired by individuals who have big egos but have little to no reason to even have them and their effects on them and those around them.  There is no winning with egotistical people no matter how much you can offer.  Having a big ego can not only hurt the one with a big ego and damage their life, but it can also hurt people they come in contact with.  This song explains that.  This is different from being successful and confident.  It is important to know the difference between confidence and ego.  Did you encounter challenges with recording this track during the pandemic?  I did not have trouble recording during the pandemic.  I record almost everything on my own so it wasn’t any differen...

Featured Artist: MeMe Detroit

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure of chatting with MeMe Detroit, who is the vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist of outfit MeMe Detroit. MeMe Detroit is a grit rock and indie music project of the UK-based duo composed of MeMe (aka Maria Theresa Rodriguez) and Kallum McEwen.  First off, we would like to congratulate you for your latest single, Mean Rock N Roller! What inspired the song?  Thnx! Mean Rock N Roller came out as a tongue in cheek, bit of fun at first but then as the lyrics progressed, it became more of an anthem to stand up for what is true to yourself. I spent years listening and living my life by what others and society were telling me I.e “Being a musician is a hard career, all musicians are poor, You should have a safety net job and music should be just a hobby” etc. I always knew deep down that music and performing is way more than just a hobby, It’s a whole lifestyle and a fire deep within me. I always said that I’d never do anything that makes me unhappy...

Featured Artist: Angela Davis

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure to chat with Angela Davis, an independent R&B musician from Detroit, Michigan. Hi Angela! Can you share with us some of your earliest memories of music? Some of my earliest music memories are listening in awe of my uncle Calvin playing and singing when he came to visit the family during the holidays. I was around 3 years old and after seeing and hearing him, I knew I wanted to sing too. I also remember singing songs by some of my favorite R&B artists (Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills) over and over again in my room. I was determined to become a good singer I joined Glee club in 5th grade (despite being terribly shy). Best decision I could've made because it helped me break out of my shell. What is it like being a musician in Detroit? Detroit is an amazing city full of some of the most talented vocalists and musicians in the world! I love the music community and culture. Over the years I have made many conne...

Featured Artist: Maini Sorri

Female Indie Musicians had the pleasure of doing a virtual interview with pop rock singer-songwriter Maini Sorri !                                                         Photos by Johan Zetterlund Hi Maini! We noticed that you have Nordic roots. How does this influence your music? I started to compose music when I was a child and lived in Finland. I sat at the piano and piano pieces just came to me. My piano teacher recorded them and appreciated them. I remember that my grandmother often asked me to play them all. My mother was also very supportive. My father had also an important impact. For him it was not enough that I could play without anyone teaching me how to do it. He said that I must take piano lessons. I think it opened a door for me that lead to my Bachelor of Arts and to a...

Featured Artist: Camille Beatriz

Hey Camille! Can you tell us where you’re from? I’m from Athens, Ga (not Greece 😂 ) everyone always thinks that if I don’t say Georgia. My mom is Cuban & my dad is Arabic & Finnish! ☺ ️ The Cuban side has definitely influenced my music & with that has given me more confidence about my culture because as a kid, I was really timid and insecure about that because of the area I was going to school in at the time. I’ve embraced it now & one of my songs “No Soy Menos” is about embracing whoever you are, especially being a woman. I’m actually not fluent in Spanish so I had to learn some more Spanish for some of it, which was hard but fun! I might have some Arabic sounding surprises in some of my new stuff 😉 Who are your biggest influences from the music industry?  Demi Lovato’s empowering & sassy lyrics in a lot of her music has really helped influence a lot of my writing. I’ve always looked up to Joan Jett & her music and she’s a total badass, but ...

Featured Artist: Valerie Rose Sterrett

Hey Valerie! Can you tell us where you’re from?  I am originally from Southern California where I grew up in a little suburb town called Newbury Park. As of now, I have lived in Ogden, Utah the past almost 7 years. I am happily married with two sphynx kitties. Just surviving, thriving and being creative.  We noticed on Spotify that your earliest release was in 2011! How long have you been pursuing music and how has your music grown and transformed over the years?  I have been a musician and singer-songwriter since I was in grade school, but I have actively been pursuing music since I was in the Army in the early 2000s. When I was 4 or 5 years of age, I started writing stories with my drawings, but I could hear music in my mind all the time. I would tell my mom that I could hear orchestras in my head. I still wake up in the middle of the night hearing a song idea and needing to hum it into a recorder. I am sure you can all relate. I wrote short little ditties as a child, o...
